Video Classics: ‘Sharp Dressed Man’
So you dress in road-worn black leather, battered wide-brimmed hats, wear your sunglasses at night and most of you have wild, bushy chest-length beards that you won’t shave off because you are, by your own admission ‘too ugly without ‘em’ …
… but your signature song is Sharp Dressed Man.
In the wild, weird world or rock, truth is often stranger than fiction, and if you go by looks alone, ZZ Top is stranger than most. And yet, behind their outlandish appearance is a band whose three members are one of the very few in all of rock and roll to have stayed together, actively recording and releasing albums for 40 years.
After years of recording and touring, building their fan base, the band found their peak of success with the 1983 album Eliminator. MTV was just starting to hit its stride, and the members of ZZ Top recognized the new importance of the music video in marketing their band’s image. Each of the album’s hits was released with its accompanying video, and tying all the videos together was the appearance of an iconic, cherry-red 1934 Ford hot rod dubbed ‘The Eliminator’ and three attractive women, the ‘Eliminator Girls’.
Sharp Dressed Man ended up being the biggest hit of them all from Eliminator, going to #2 in the U.S. when it was released as a single later in the year. It remains ZZ Top’s signature song and biggest hit to date, though with the band still releasing albums, you never know when they may strike again.
