Being an NFL Ref can be confusing at times

I admit it, I make mistakes at times.. But imagine being an NFL Referee and having to announce what the penalties are in a game? You have to process a ton of stuff on any given penalty. Knowing what the penalty is, who it’s against, all those little details to get the call right.

Something went horribly wrong during the Cowboys – Texans game today. I’m still laughing about it.

The Annual State Fair and Bad Weather Thread

September 26, 2010

Howdy!

Are you ever amazed at how consistent things are sometimes? The State Fair of Texas began last Friday, and with that, came the annual occurence of rain and bad weather. It does this every year as far as I can remember. One of the most unusual things I think about when it’s State Fair time, is how many different ways you can fry different foods. How do you fry Dr. Pepper?

Congrats on the Texas Rangers winning the American League West Division yesterday. I have a greater appreciation for a team that plays 162 games in the sweltering summer heat in Texas. Trust me, I had trouble just attending about half of those dates as a spectator at the Grand Prairie AirHogs games. It isn’t easy to do. Hopefully, the Rangers will be more than a one-and-done team. It would be exciting if the Rangers could possibly be a part of the World Series!

Mr. Will and the Last Days of Baseball Season

And as we semi-celebrate the last day of summer, here is my good friend Will Martin signing off at one of the last Grand Prairie AirHogs game this year. A right of passage, here comes the fall of summer, as we enter the fall. So long summer. So long baseball.

Wade Phillips: We’re Close, But Too Far Away

Wade Phillips: We’re Close, But Too Far Away.

Forgive me for saying so Cowboys fans….but doesn’t Wade seem extra defensive after the Bears beat the Cowboys yesterday? Wade wanted to say it was all his fault…trying to save his players from taking any responsibility for their actions at all. Man.

I hate the “we gotta do this, and we gotta do that” crap.

Which NFL Team Is Really “America’s Team?”

From Ted Williams Head

The Dallas Cowboys have self-anointed themselves “America’s Team.” The proclamation was made in a 1978 Dallas Cowboys highlight film when the narrator said:

They appear on television so often that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars. They are the Dallas Cowboys, “America’s Team.”

30 years later, Cowboys fans are still boasting about being “America’s Team,” but are they really? What about the Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers, and the New York Giants?

Call up the Cavalry!

When you or your unit is down, out-numbered and out-gunned, when you absolutely have to get out of a jam, when you absolutely have to win, you call in the Cavalry.

The U. S. Army carries that tradition on with several cavalry units to this day. Sure, the game has changed, helicopters and tanks replaced the horses, but the tradition of the Cavalry lives on, and I like that. I’m an old Infantry guy, but I enjoy researching and reading about the traditions that are Cavalry. Actually, that’s not quite correct. I’m a Signal person that was assigned to an Engineer Battalion within an Infantry Division. Hope that makes sense. But I digress. I got to talking about the Cavalry recently to a friend and wanted to investigate the traditions of the Cavalry further.

This mission to find out more about the Cavalry started in my quest to find a Cavalry hat.

Makes you wonder how people think right?

NFL Hall of Famer Dan “Danimal” Hampton, who is now a co-host on Pro Football Weekly, said this about the Minnesota Vikings playing in New Orleans: “The Vikings need to go down there and hit that town like Katrina.” Oops.

How do you think of stuff like that?

Just imagine, that was only one statement that was offensive.

He also said the Dallas Cowboys were more of the “Brokeback” kind of Cowboys. Wow.

Where did they find this guy?

Wait, wasn’t he dropped on his head as a kid? Another gem from Hampton.

Well, on a better subject, we had our NFL football draft yesterday and I selected the NY Jets as my defensive team. I took grief because Darrelle Revis still hadn’t signed. I wake up this morning and boooo yaaahhh, he’s signed! Sweet. Now, maybe I can work on the running back situation, where I had the 215th best running back in the league.

So, it’s Labor Day today. The last holiday until Thanksgiving. Make it a good one!

Saturday Scattershooting (Labor Day Weekend Edition)

Aaahhh yeah, 3 days off for the weekend.  A time for grilling out hotdogs, going to the golf course, watching the time fly.

Just reading some interesting sports stories this morning.

NFL fines Lions’ Ndamukong Suh $7,500 for hit on Jake Delhomme. Wow, did you see this hit?

The No. 2 overall pick in April’s draft grabbed Delhomme’s face mask and twisted it, then wrapped his arms around the quarterback’s head and slammed him to the ground in the second quarter of last Saturday’s game.

Suh said later he didn’t know Delhomme had thrown the ball before he hit him.

”I was just going after the ball, and I had no clue that he had gotten rid of it,” he said.

And this is just pre-season! Holy moly, what’s he gonna do when the season starts?
