Don’t look now Josh Hamilton, but your replacement just signed a Ranger contract

Dear Josh Hamilton, you should get well soon, and stay well. A potential replacement for you has just been signed by the Rangers:

Cuban defector Leonys Martin has finalized a $15.5 million, five-year  contract with the Texas Rangers, and the speedy center fielder could be in their  lineup before the end of this season.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said there is no immediate timetable for  Martin, who was signed Wednesday to have a future impact. But Daniels  acknowledged that it was possible that the 23-year-old outfielder could move  quickly through the system to the majors depending on his progress and the  team’s needs.

Before Josh Hamilton broke his arm diving into home plate three weeks ago and  went on the disabled list, the Rangers had already moved the AL MVP to left  field and made Julio Borbon their primary center fielder. Borbon went into  Wednesday night’s game at Seattle hitting .262, having raised his average 83  points by hitting .409 (9 of 22) over the previous 10 games.

I predict things are going to be getting pretty interesting in Arlington very soon.

Baseball Reporter Evan Grant Creates Twitter Hashtag Comedy

If you follow Dallas Morning News baseball writer Evan Grant (Evan_P_Grant) on Twitter, you already know about his hashtag-gate. After the Rangers’ bullpen blew last night’’s game in Seattle, Grant innocently wrote:

Now Rangers’ going to 40-year-old interim closer in tie game with 0 outs in eighth and go-ahead runner on third. #bullpenisamess

He said he didn’t do it on purpose. He didn’t realize the “brilliance” of the tweet until the tweet was posted. Needless to say, it’s rocketing through the Internet.

Blue Wahoos or Redbones?

It appears that Class AA Southern League team Pensacola is searching for a new team name:

The six finalists for the moniker of the new Pensacola team in the Class AA Southern League, slated to begin play in 2013, have been announced by the franchise, as the best of 1,700 finalists are unveiled.

The finalists, in alphabetical order:

  • Aviators. Home of the “The Cradle of Naval Aviation,” Pensacola is the primary training base for America’s Navy, Marine and Coast Guard aviators, as well as the Navy’s precision-flying team, the Blue Angels.
  • Blue Wahoos. Named for the explosive way they pull out of the water, Wahoos are a tough hometown fish that means business.
  • Loggerheads. Found in Pensacola’s shallow waters, the loggerhead sea turtle is a local endangered species. Known for its nesting on Pensacola beaches, the loggerhead is state saltwater reptile of Florida.
  • Mullets. Double meaning here: the haircut and one of Pensacola’s most popular fish.
  • Redbones. This ties into the upcoming affiliation with the Cincinnati Reds.
  • Salty Dogs. Another naval reference, this time to expert sailors.

Some great names to be sure. I’m a little surprised there are no names with pirates in them. Arrrrrgh! You would think it would be logical as well!

The Jose Cuervo Games are upon us

It’s that time of year where we celebrate Cinco De Mayo, and congrats to everyone about that, but I actually won’t begin celebrating Cinco de Mayo until the 6th of May. I guess that would be the Seis y Mayo?

At any rate, I’ll be flying out to the Cuervo Games in Scottsdale Arizona to capture the goings on and celebrations there. Here is the backdrop for the games:
