Saturday Scattershooting

April 24, 21010

Good Saturday morning world!

It’s the best day of the week for me. I have time to sit down with a cup of coffee and collect my thoughts that get stored in my head throughout the week, but I never have time to write about at that time.

Thanks for stopping by, I know there are millions of things to read, so I’ll get right to the point with my thoughts.

How bout those Cowboys huh? Dez Bryant and Sean Lee. Everyone keeps asking the question “what about left tackle?” I would imagine Jerry already has that question answered. The Cowboys already have Doug Free, but remember, this is an unrestricted cap year in the NFL, which means Jerry can go buy anyone he wants in the free agent market place. Owners can spend as much as they want, there is no cap. Watch what happens after this draft is over. The fun will just be starting.

I’m starting a new group to see if there is an interest by writers who want to network and exchange ideas. The group is called “Starving Writers” and I have started a page on Facebook for the group. I find it hard to really think of myself as of writer, but the fact is, I’ve been doing this blog for a few years now, and I like writing, so I guess I can consider myself as a writer. Pretty sure there are tons of folks like me out there so we’ll see how this group goes. Let’s hope we can get some people interested in it but I’m somewhat sceptical as I haven’t seen many people comment on this blog, but we’ll see. I’m sure there are people out there that write poetry, short stories, interest in many things, so let’s see if we can stir that interest in joining a group. The reason I call the group Starving Writers is most writers that are starting out and are passionate about writing, very seldom get paid. We do it because it’s interesting and it’s like a second nature to us. It’s like a starving artist kind of thing. There is talent and desire, we just don’t get paid for it. That’s ok, we don’t need the money to do what we like to do. So, we’ll see how it goes.

I’m very thankful my stress test came back ok. It was huge in fact for me to realize I’m ok. I hadn’t realized how worried I was about myself that I caused myself more harm than good. The plain truth is, I worried too much and dwelled on it too much. After the stress test, I went out last night and had some chicken wings and boy, were they good. It was a far cry from the rice and beans I had been eating to make sure I hadn’t been eating any fat.

Some other rambling thoughts:

Will Tiger and his wife get divorced?

Will the Texas Rangers ever get sold?

How will the Dallas Mavericks feel if they lose in the 1st round to San Antonio?

How long will it take before Deadspin.com to get sued?

I’m about to go do some Saturday chores. Thanks for reading my blog, and come back soon!

Tiger Wood’s New Nike Ad : Earl and Tiger

Regardless of how you feel about Tiger Wood and his private life, you have to give the folks at Nike credit: They are masters at marketing.

Witness the new commercial with Tiger and voice over dialog with the departed father Earl Woods.

Brilliant!

I am humbled

I am humbled and feel blessed that I (along with 20,000 fellow work associates in north Texas), get to work volunteering in the north Texas community this coming year.

The timing of our team volunteering in the community is great because of the upcoming Super Bowl 45 that will be here in 2011. Much to do, and much to plan for. Cutting edge volunteering for such organizations as Slant 45, and many others to help the citizens of our community. We have plans this year to join up with the United Way and many other great organizations to Walk For the Homeless, the Susan B. Koman Foundation and many others.

I can’t wait to get started.

Decisons are sometimes difficult

I don’t want to drag this post out, because it’s difficult enough as it is. I have a friend that is moving from a house to an apartment and has to find a good home to two of the 3 pictured dogs here. The Border Collie is Harley, and the part German Shepard is Sarge. The Boxer in the back has a home already. These dogs are just great dogs, and I can’t believe it has come down to this……….well, we all have to do what we have to do.

I’m asking any of you here on the internets for help in finding Harley and Sarge a new home. I hope we can find them a good home soon. This has to be done as much as I hate to say it. We would love it if they could stay together. It’s like giving up two of your kids so this isn’t easy. Please spread the word. Please contact me at lewp@gmail.com

Thanks.

‘Tis the season to think of others

I just read a great story about an organization I had never heard about before. It’s called the Snowball Express.

Among the hordes of children who trampled Southfork Ranch on Thursday, Kenneth Landrus wore his dead father’s Army-issued sun hat. It came about level with Giuranna’s shoulder as the two wandered side-by-side among the fields.

“Where do you want to walk?” Giuranna asked.

The 10-year-old didn’t want to walk anywhere. With a toothy grin, he led Giuranna on a series of sprints across the ranch, finally letting the Marine pass so he could tackle him from behind.

Everywhere he went on the ranch, kids flowed to Giuranna out of the chaos – the girls greeting him with hugs, the boys with wrestling holds. A TAPS mentor for a little over a year, he sometimes forgot at which event he had met a child, remembering them better by how they lost a parent.

Throughout the four-day program, children occasionally broke down, and a mentor would take them aside to talk through their feelings.

On Friday, as he and Kenneth stood in line for a game at the Dallas Convention Center, the boy randomly asked: “Did I ever tell you how my dad died?”

I’m not sure what you are doing for Christmas, but I wish you the merriest of holidays. I hope perhaps there might be something you can do for a kid that’s been through a lot. I put a link to this great organization on the blog. Do what you can please. Merry Christmas!

High School is a great place to learn how to file suit

News out of Fort Worth Texas this morning as I find this story pretty amazing when I think about it.

A high school volleyball coach is actually getting sued because the coach is asking the player to get a doctor’s permission slip to play volleyball?

Amazing.

Mackenzie McCollum, 17, a senior at Arlington Heights High School, filed a civil-rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, said Lara Kaufman, the girl’s attorney.

Kaufmann, an attorney with the National Women’s Law Center in Washington, D.C., said the district violated Title IX, the landmark law passed in 1972 aimed at ending sex-based discrimination in public schools.

“They can’t just categorically exclude students who are pregnant,” Kaufmann said. “They need to treat everyone the same.”

Asked if they plan to file a lawsuit, Kaufman said she could not comment.

So instead of learning about space exploration or whatever they teach in high school now, it’s all about making sure a kid gets their rights because they were silly enough to get pregnant in high school and wants to play volleyball. Ridiculous.

I think the coach did the right thing, but that’s just my opinion. Running steps for a pregnant kid can be dangerous you know.

Tiger Wood jokes

Tiger Woods Jokes Official position: What goes on in their marriage is none of our business, and just because he cheats, doesn’t mean we’re entitled to explore and exploit his personal life even further.

HOWEVER, here are the jokes going around. Healing through unmalicious laughter?

It’s time for our high school reunion!

It’s time to go to my high school reunion.

I thought of all kinds of reasons why I shouldn’t go. Let’s see, because it’s supposed to rain, uhh I need to change the plugs in my truck, uhhh not sure if my sock drawer is organized enough….ok, so the real reason i started to not go? I’m unemployed. Think about it….Imagine the questions. “Uh Lewis? What are you doing now?” This coming from a guy that has 35 years at Haliburton or some such…It’s gonna be difficult, so why go through with it?

Because this might be the last time I see these people! The Class of 69 is 40 years old this year. Wow.

So I’m gonna load up the laptop and camera and trek over to west texas tomorrow and enjoy the day that is the reunion. Wish me luck.

Well I’ m here at Mustang Bowl….Be sure to keep with with live updates here!
