NFL, Dallas Cowboys Owner Seek Dismissal of Super Bowl Suit

Something tells me we haven’t heard the last of this.

The National Football League and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones asked a judge  to dismiss a lawsuit over Super Bowl XLV tickets, saying reimbursement offers to  displaced ticket holders were legally adequate.

“These offers were made to be accommodating to the NFL’s valued fans, but in  fact, they exceed the amount to which any of the ticket holders is entitled,”  lawyers for the NFL and Jones said in a court filing today.

I guess I don’t understand the defense that the NFL and Jerry Jones are using. It sounds like they are saying that they replaced the ticket holders expense for the original seats that they purchased.

The fans, seeking to represent other ticket holders in a class-action, or group  suit, accuse the league and Jones of breach of contract, breach of faith and  fair dealing, fraud, deceit and concealment and negligent misrepresentation.
Lawyers for the league and Jones said in an earlier filing that they offered to  pay 3,296 fans a total of $4.5 million to $9.3 million.

“The motion filed by the NFL is nothing more than a Hail Mary pass,” Michael  Avenatti, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said in a phone interview. “Unfortunately  for them, it is going to land on the ground.”

About 475 fans weren’t  seated and watched the game on video screens. Another 2,821 fans were relocated  to new seats, or were delayed outside the stadium, according to court  papers.

The case is Simms v  Jones, 3:11-cv–00248 U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas  (Dallas).

It sounds like some fans weren’t even given seats inside of the stadium. What sort of reimbursement is that?

Wake Up Call: Of course Jerry is invited to the wedding

In the biggest publicity stunt since Barnum and Bailey’s Circus came to town, Jerry Jones actually went on ESPN to tell us mere mortal, poor people that he has “special permission” to attend Tony Romo’s wedding this Saturday in Dallas. Isn’t that special?

“I’ve gotten special permission,” Jones said. “But more than anything, [I got
the] right ticket from him and his fianceé — Romo’s wife-to-be. [It's] one of
prettiest invitations I’ve ever seen.

Oh please Jerry. Do me a favor and get back to the negotiating table and break this impasse with the NFL Players Union, and lets play some football ok?

Because of the lockout, NFL teams are not allowed to speak with players or agents. However, there have been some charity events where players and coaches have crossed paths.

Technically, Jones doesn’t need special permission from the league to go to Romo’s wedding. Personal events and situations where team officials would interact with a player — such as weddings, funerals, serious illnesses or
medical emergencies — don’t need to be cleared through the league office.

Romo has sent out wedding invitations to all of his teammates and most, if not all, are expected to attend. Romo is marrying former television reporter Candice Crawford.

“It’s going to be a fun day,” Romo said earlier this week. “When you have the right one, you just know.”

Boy Howdy, we are happy now.

Romo misses U.S. Open bid with 81

Well, Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys had plenty of time to play golf since the Cowboys or any other team can’t practice due to the NFL lockout, but now he can’t even do that.

Romo shot a 9-over 81 at the local qualifier at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney on Monday. He had needed to finish in the top 10 to move on to sectional qualifying at Dallas Athletic Club next month. The U.S. Open is June 16-19 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

See what happens when you get engaged?

The insanity of an NFL lockout

The insanity of the on-again off-again lockout continues. Players like Tony Romo and others showed up for work today amid a judge’s injunction to end the holdout was overturned.

From NBC Sports:

Although NFL players were being welcomed back to team facilities this morning because of Judge Susan Nelson’s injunction to end the lockout, that is changing this afternoon.

ESPN is reporting that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit has granted a temporary stay of the injunction and reinstated the lockout, meaning players will now be told to hit the road, and doors to team facilities are being locked this afternoon.

Michael Silver of Yahoo reported this afternoon that NFL players were bracing for a ruling from the Court of Appeals that would give the owners an “administrative” stay, meaning the lockout would be back on at least through the weekend.

Then, as soon as Monday, the Eighth Circuit will hear the players’ argument against a stay. At that point, the lockout could remain on, or the players could be let back in, depending on the Eighth Circuit’s ruling. And either way, it would just be temporary until the appeals court makes a decision on the owners’ appeal of Judge Nelson’s ruling.

So just hours after players were let back into team facilities this morning, they’ll now be told that they’re no longer welcome this afternoon. And we’ll all wait until Monday to see what the appeals court does next.

UPDATE: ESPN has now retracted its report that the stay was already granted, although a stay is expected.

Jiminey Christmas!! Make up your mind!!!!! Let’s get this settled!!!!

When will Tony Romo realize he can’t sing?

I understand when a person feels all good and things are going your way. You might sing in the shower. You might sing to yourself on break some place where no one can hear you. But not Tony Romo. Tony wants you to know he can’t sing a lick, and loves to be caught on video trying to sing. Take a look at this video that was captured this past week end at a local Dallas club.

And don’t say he can’t carry a note because the music is so loud. This next video prooves he just can’t carry a note, even in studio.

Stick to football Tony… Please!

It’s time for a Hog update and other tidbits.

Are you tired of winter yet? I am. So when I start to feel that claustrophobic feeling, I start thinking about baseball. The Great Game.

I became a fan of the minor league team the Grand Prairie Airhogs. They play pretty close to my home, and they are cheaper than the Rangers, although I hope to attend a lot of their games this year as well.

That said, I noticed that the Airhogs have hired one of my favorite ex-Rangers in Curtis Wilkerson.

The Grand Prairie AirHogs announce the addition of former Major League infielder, Curtis Wilkerson to its coaching staff. Wilkerson, who played ten seasons in the Major Leagues (1983‐1993) will join the ranks of former Texas Ranger teammate Pete Incaviglia, who is entering his third season as the AirHogs’ manager.

“I’m excited to be joining Pete and the AirHogs organization,” Wilkerson said, “I can’t wait to get to work and am looking forward to a successful season.”

Drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 4th round of the 1980 draft, Wilkerson was named the Rangers’ Rookie of the Year in 1984. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1988, where he played two seasons, and later spent time with both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals before retiring in 1993.

After ending his playing career, Wilkerson coached in both the Pirates and Royals organizations and managed in the Continental Baseball League. So it will be good to see Wilkie on the bench this year.

And what is this?

Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin is the surprise choice of Southern California to replace Pete Carroll as football coach, leaving the Volunteers after just one season. The hiring was announced by USC on Tuesday night, hours after Carroll was introduced in Seattle as coach of the NFL’s Seahawks.

Kiffin, 34, is a disciple of Carroll, serving on his staff from 2001 to 2006. In Kiffin’s last two seasons at USC, he was offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

”This was not an easy decision,” Kiffin said at a brief news conference in Knoxville. “It happened very quickly.

I have a theory about a coach that moves so quickly after being on the job at a major college for a short time. Remember what happened to former TCU coach Dennis Franchione? Franchione built a successful program at TCU and was hired to coach at the University of Alabama. he was only there for a couple of years and then stood Bama up to take the job at Texas A&M and failed miserably. I think the thing that’s the common denominator is the programs may be in trouble. So we’ll see about how this story unfolds, but expect some kind of NCAA sanctions against Tennessee where Kiffin has coached for only 14 months.

The rumor is Tennessee is interested in Texas defensive coördinator Will Muschamp. We’ll see about that.

And what’s up with Tony Romo? I mean, does he get fired up imitating referee’s calls on the field? Check this out.

Time for another cup of coffee. Have a great day.

Congrats to the 2009 NFC East Champion Dallas Cowboys!

Fact:  With the shutout today of the Philadelphia Eagles, it’s the first time in the 49 year history of the Dallas Cowboys where they have shut out teams 2 consecutive games in a row.

Fact: Tony Romo is the only QB in the NFL that has taken every snap for his team this year.

Fact: The Dallas Cowboys are your 2009 NFC East Champions.

The Cowboys are hot right now, just at the right time.

Tony Romo threw a pair of early touchdown passes and the defense took over from there, sending Dallas to a 24-0 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday and setting up a rematch at their new palace next weekend.

The Cowboys (11-5) have quickly become a team nobody wants to face this postseason. This was their third straight impressive win and their most complete performance of the entire season.

The shutout also made for a major milestone in the club’s storied history: First-ever back-to-back blanking. Only twice in the previous 49 seasons had they even had two shutouts the entire season.

Philadelphia (11-5) hadn’t been swept by Dallas since 2005. The Eagles had two of their three lowest-scoring games against the Cowboys, with the common denominator being a lack of big plays. Their longest in this game was 32 yards on a first-half drive that ended in a fumbled snap.

And this is what Eagles coach Andy Reid said after the game:

“We’ll be ready,” a terse coach Andy Reid said after the game.

“They were a better football team all the way around, offense, defense and special teams … We have to go back to the drawing board and make sure we get things right for this next game here.”

“I didn’t think it was a lack of effort. It goes back to putting the players in the right position and when they are in the right positions to make the plays. Maybe a little bit too much effort, maybe to relax a little bit.”

Reid said the Eagles were going to try to “learn from their mistakes and do better the next time.”

The coach was asked about going for a David Akers field goal, trailing by 17-0.

“I would like to have gotten some points there.”

On the injury front, Reid said DeSean Jackson tweaked his groin but was “feeling all right.”

Michael Vick was again inactive with a quad strain, but Reid said he did not have any setback leading into the game.

“We had a couple of things with him this week and decided to pull back there,” Reid said.

Man oh man, the NEXT game is gonna be just as awesome as today. The difference? It will finally be a time to win a playoff game for a change.

It’s December, so Romo must be in love

Many experts are trying to figure out why the Cowboys fold in December. Has anyone tracked Romo’s personal life in December? I think it’s kinda easy to figure out.

More ring news today; this time concerning Dallas’ own Tony Romo and the lovely Candice Crawford, shown here working the Missouri state motto very hard. To my knowledge the two have never been successfully photographed together in the wild, but it’s rumored that they’re seeing each other, and quite successfully, it appears. According to a couple of sources, Romo and Crawford have just become engaged.

As if the Cowboys need any more distractions in December.

Sorry girls, Tony Romo may be engaged (Out of Bounds)

Is Carrie Underwood singing about a well known Cowboy?

You be the judge.

When Carrie Underwood released her song “Cowboy Casanova,” some wondered if the song was a shot at Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, whom Underwood used to date. In the song, Underwood derides the Casanova as “candy-coated misery” and “the devil in disguise.”

Esquire asked Underwood if her song was directed at the Dallas quarterback, and the singer swiftly rejected the idea — and came out swinging at Romo. She tells the magazine, “No. I would never immortalize a guy that did me wrong. I would never give him that much credit.”

You’re running, you’re trying, you’re trying to hide
And you’re wondering why you can’t get free

Trying to hide? Like, say, in Mexico?

He’s like a curse, he’s like a drug
You get addicted to his love

This may have less to do with Romo and more to do with the songwriters being in a Robert Palmer phase at the time they wrote this song.
