I was leaving work and took the DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) train to Union Station in Dallas to get on the Trinity Railway Express to go home in Fort Worth.
When I got to Union Station, the place was all a buzz with the pending celebration of National Train Day.
What a photo opportunity! Too bad I left my Nikkon at home, so I had to make do with taking pictures with my cell phone.
There were several older trains on display and what a hoot it was to see them.
There was an old rag-time band there to play good ol jazz music as well. The mood was great!
Of course, here in the Dallas area, when you talk about trains, you talk about getting around in the metroplex. And when you talk about getting around in the metroplex, you have to include DART.
I had the opportunity of talking to DART police officer SGT S.L. Plunk. That’s her there beside her brand new Harley Davidson. That motorcycle had maybe 50 miles on it and still smelled new. I had the opportunity to ask her some questions about her job and some of her responsibilities. DART police support the Dallas Police Department and vice-versa. I didn’t know that DART is responsible for the HOV lanes on various freeways (HOV= high occupancy vehicles).
Another part of the DART Department we got to see and I didn’t even know they had, was a dog handler and dog. I am very sorry I didn’t write the officer’s name down and I can’t remember the dog’s name, but the canine officer gave us in the crowd a great demonstration of how he takes the dog on trains looking for explosives.
Here’s something I didn’t know. If we walk into a pizza place, we humans smell pizza. If a dog were to walk in a pizza place, they would smell each ingredient individually. Amazing huh? I really had a good time at this event, and i hope to see it again next year!
Thanks to Sgt. S.L. Plunk (DART), G.A. Hutchison (DART), and the many employees of DART.
