Wake Up Call: Your AirHogs break the slide!

What a relief it is to end a 4 game losing streak right?

Meanwhile, I had a chance to sit down with AirHogs closer, Big John Hunton. Check out this interview.

And then I caught up with him after he got his uniform on.

He’s a good guy, and we AirHogs fans should be glad he’s here. Just a great guy.

Now, would you like to know who gets my vote for the best AirHogs fan?

Nathan is a great kid, he just passed the first grade. He loves coming to QuikTrip Park to get autographs. It doesn’t have to be just AirHog autographs either. He just loves being able to get any and all autographs of his big league heroes, no matter what team they play for. I’ve been watching Nathan do this for a year now, and it warms my heart that kids still see big league ball players as heroes. I still believe there is something honest and pure in that notion. Hats off to Lil Nathan!  Check out his pictures after the jump.

Wakeup Call: Yes, the AirHogs were swept, so what?

Good morning you bright and beautiful sports fans. Welcome to another week of summer in the world of sports. Before I begin with today’s news, please be advised that the Grand Prairie AirHogs were swept in their 3 game series with the St. Paul Saints. All I have to say to that is, “so what?”

It’s just one series. It’s the first time the AirHogs lost a series this year, gimme a break. Last night’s game was the first time they were shut out this year. gimme a break. All I can say is, it was one series. The good news is, there is a different opponent tonight at QuikTrip Park. Amarillo makes its first trip to the city for tonight’s game, and YOU can be a part of it.

So ok, here is the bad news, but let me just say, sometimes the more you try to analyze something, sometimes it’s like micro-managing, it get’s worse. My suggestion is, just look at this past weekend as an freak of nature. It was out of the ordinary. The Grand Prairie AirHogs are still in first place, just like the Texas Rangers are.

By the way, I heard a lot of folks didn’t go to the game because you wanted to watch the Mavs last night. Now I’m a big Mavs fan too, but why spend 5 hours on a team only to lose in the last seconds by two points? Crazy. Could have seen that at the ball park after the baseball game was over. They televised it.

From AirHogsbaseball.com: Bats go quiet as AirHogs are swept

In the first two games of the series against the St. Paul Saints, the Grand Prairie AirHogs had plenty of opportunities to get victories, but could not get the big hit they needed. On Sunday, the AirHogs were simply overwhelmed at the plate by three Saints pitchers, as St. Paul won 7-0 to complete a three-game sweep in front of 1,552 fans at QuikTrip Park.

OK, so the AirHogs were swept. I’m looking out my window this morning and guess what? The sun came up! Let’s get on with the new day shall we?

I saw some funny things at the park over the weekend. Check this out:

So come on out to the park tonight and watch the AirHogs get back on track. It’s gonna be sweet!!!

Opening Day 2011: Grand Prairie AirHogs baseball

There is just something magical about the Opening Day of baseball. This past weekend was the opening day for the Grand Prairie AirHogs, and there was much to see and do as we old baseball dogs reminisce about baseball everywhere.

Aaahh yeah, the sounds of fans at the park, people standing in line to buy tickets, little baseball players in all shapes and sizes, coming to the park to enjoy baseball!

A brand new team brings new hopes and new dreams of having a championship caliber team here in Grand Prairie. There are still some great players from previous teams here.

So do yourself a favor. Get out to QuikTrip Park as soon as you can and enjoy the fun, the food, and some great baseball. Live the dream!

A new season, a new attitude for the AirHogs

Last night, I had the opportunity of going to the “meet and greet” for the new Grand Prairie AirHogs baseball team called the “Taste of QuikTrip Park”. It was a great way to indeed meet the new team. I was very much impressed.

There is a ton of excitement already about just how good this team might be.

I had a chance to hear new manager Ricky VanAsselberg describe his expectations for this year:

I hit it off with Ricky right off due to his south Louisiana roots, and I have to tell you, this guy is successful, having coached for 6 years and having 5 championships under his belt. I got the feeling we are in store for lots of fun at QuickTrip Park this year.

I had a chance to meet some players. Only four players remain from last year’s roster: Greg Porter, David Espinoza, Danny Jordan, and Marcus Salmon. When I spoke to Porter I asked him what he saw as the biggest difference between this roster and last year’s and he said “this team is more mature.” I took that to mean this team was more serious about winning and at least that was my impression. I had only been at the park for just an hour and had learned that Chris Garcia (Infielder) had already been called up by the Atlanta Braves. Whatever you think about the minor leagues, the ultimate goal for a player here is to “make the show”. Get that call for the major leagues.

In speaking to these players, even though some had only been here a few days, there was an air of a winning attitude already. I thought to myself this looks much different than last year. It looks like everyone is on the same page.

I heard the phrase “Teamwork, makes dreams work.” Wow, how’s that for a new attitude? Lots of these players are from AA and AAA minor league teams and Greg Smith was on the Colorado Rockies team last year as a pitcher.

There was also some big news about the games and promotions out at the park this year. On 6/24 the San Diego Chicken will be out at the park. I wonder how he and Ace Bacon will get along?

There is also going to be an AirHogs Officer Club which means you pay 40.00 and get all you can eat and drink the rest of the night, in a suite I think, but I will get clarification on the suite part.

There is going to be a new food court kind of set up this year with vendors from Texas Skillet, Pizzaiolo’s Italian food, Snoball Corral (shaved ice), and Flores Fajitas Mexican food, to go along with the QT Stores site.

All in all, I was very, very impressed and looking forward to a great new season of AirHogs baseball. Ya’ll all better come on out and jump on the bandwagon. This team is going places!

Grand Prairie AirHogs have a new skipper

Hang on to your hats folks, we are about to see some great baseball in Grand Prairie. The season is about to start for 2011, and there are new owners, and a new coach. Things are going to get pretty interesting around here.

From AirHogsbaseball.com comes this news:

The Grand Prairie AirHogs announced today that Ricky VanAsselberg has been named the team’s field manager for the 2011 season.  VanAsselberg comes to Grand   Prairie after two years as the manager of the American Association champion Shreveport-Bossier Captains.

“I’m thrilled about getting the chance to manage the AirHogs,’’ said VanAsselberg.  “I know the folks in Grand Prairie are excited about the 2011 season.  It’s a great area for baseball.  I think the fans will really enjoy watching this team play.”

VanAsselberg led the Captains to the 2010 American Association title by sweeping Sioux Falls in the finals.  The Captains finished the regular season with a 58-37 record.  In 2009, VanAsselberg led the team to a 48-48 record – a 22-game improvement from the previous season.

And what kind of fire and brimstone will VanAsselberg bring? Have a look.
