History of the World: The Demise of Fountain Pens
Of course, there was still room for improvement – in 1949, a couple of guys invented a pent with no-smear ink and a retractable tip. THey called it the Papermate. Then, in 1952, Marcel Bich came up with a smooth-writing pen in a plastic barrel and named it after himself, although he dropped the “H” and called it the Bic.
But, in lots of countries, ballpoint pens are still called biros, and in Argentina, Lazlo’s September 29 birthday is celebrated as Inventors’ Day.

Colt McCoy, Texas Longhorns to test SI cover jinx
The Texas Longhorns will test-drive their new No. 1 ranking along with the Sports Illustrated cover jinx during Saturday’s 7 p.m. game in Austin against No. 11 Missouri.
Officials at the magazine distributed cover photos Tuesday of their Oct. 20 editions, which features Texas quarterback Colt McCoy running with the football during last week’s 45-35 upset of Oklahoma. The cover headline says, “The Heart of Texas,” with smaller type referencing the fact that the Longhorns are this week’s top-ranked team in the college football polls. For McCoy, it marks his first time to appear on an SI cover.
Acho undergoes surgery: Texas linebacker Emmanuel Acho underwent arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to repair cartilage damage in his left knee, an injury sustained Saturday against Oklahoma. Texas trainers said no timetable has been set for Acho’s return.

Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In
Mark, William, Chip and I were talking about the 60’s show Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In today on the train. I had forgotten how funny that show actually was. I got home and found a nice little YouTube of the show. Have a look:
You can imagine that back in that era, this show was pretty cutting edge. Nothing had ever been done like it before. The humor was risque to say the least, and it pushed the envelope when it came to network censorship. It truly was a great show, and one of the strong suits of Laugh-In was the viewers sensed that the crew really enjoyed working with each other. What a classic show this was.
