OK, Lou Holtz Apologized; Will ESPN Discipline Him?

As you’re surely aware of by now, Lou Holtz made the unfortunate mistake of comparing Adolf Hitler to Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez on the air last night. Rodriguez’s non-existent mustache has yet to issue a statement.

ESPN wisely (if inconsiderately) roused Mr. Holtz from the comfort of his bed this morning, and made him apologize in front of the entire world to Rodriguez and the folks at Michigan for his slip of the tongue. And in case you missed Gameday this morning, here’s what Lou had to say for himself:

“Last night while trying to make a point about leadership, I made an unfortunate reference. It was a mistake and I sincerely apologize. At the time, I tried to clarify my remarks. I’m not sure I adequately did so.”

“I appreciate your understanding.”

Right. Anyhow, when Page 2 columnist Jemele Hill referenced Hitler in one of her columns a few months ago, her employer asked her to sit out a few plays. Will the same happen to Sweet Lou? Apparently not.

According to Michael David Smith’s sources in Bristol, ESPN will not suspend their lovably ancient college football analyst. Because old people can say stuff like this without dealing with any real consequences, you see.

Lou Holtz Is Down With Hugh

So, Lou Holtz apologized for his Hitler remarks from last night. If anyone has video of this, feel free to send along. Another guy who might have to issue an apology (a very personal one) is Terry Bowden, who wrote that his brother Tommy deserved to get canned.

Texas Tech and Texas A&M are locked into a pretty good battle; early the fourth quarter, Tech is up 30-23. Georgia has a one-touchdown lead on Vanderbilt, and Maryland is blanking Wake Forest 19-0.

(By the way, the picture – found here – accompanying this post has absolutely nothing to do with the games. I hope you don’t mind too much.)

Onto your comments…

On Gameday this morning, someone in the 2nd or 3rd row had a sign that said “CHASE DANIEL HAS A FUPA”. Hilarity ensued when some ESPN techie with a headset stood on something, reached over some fans, and ripped it out of their hands. Please tell me someone has video of this..

Jerrod Johnson looks like the second coming of JaMarcus Russell. Good running skills, big arm, even bigger appetite.

Either Lou Holtz just apologized, or Mushmouth said Fat Albert and Weird Donald were in trouble, I’m not really sure.

Breaking News! Tony Romo Stands Around Watching Practice, Terrible Concerts

But that’s not all – he also did some light football tossing yesterday…with the very hand he throws a football with! Yep, no news was big news at Cowboys practice on Friday, as Romo suited up but didn’t do a whole heckuva lot. The Cowboys’ injury report lists him as questionable (with an “America’s pinkie”) for Sunday’s game against St. Louis, but according to Jerry Jones, if he’s a real man, he’s playing:

“He threw the ball well so it’s very likely that he will be able to play,” Jones said on his weekly radio appearance on KTCK. “Again, the question is: Can he handle the pain? . . . It looks like that he’ll be able to play.”

Snap! Presumably in response to this affront to his manhood, Romo went and did what most guys would do in the same situation: go and watch their celebrity girlfriends perform live in concert at a Texas state fair. Yes, Romo thrilled concertgoers and stragglers-from-the-rib-eating-contest alike by walking through the crowd towards a sound booth to watch Jessica Simpson show off her newfound country chops. And while Jessica Simpson show + Tony Romo sighting = Friday night in heaven for most, you’re going to have to do better to impress one reluctant attendee:

“My wife dragged me out here,” said Charlie Ball of Fairview, who added that he does think Ms. Simpson is attractive.

Still no word on what Romo’s pinkie thought of the show.

Lou Holtz Might Be Taking Some Time Off

So, we didn’t see this live and, at 7:30 on a Friday, well, most people who handle the video uploading duties over here are out enjoying the weekend, but according to many readers, and a couple of message boards, Lou Holtz just dropped a Hitler reference during one installment of College Football Live.

The context of the conversation was about Rich Rodriguez’s not-so-great start as the University of Michigan’s head coach and Holtz chose this phrase as part of his analysis.: “Ya know, Hitler was a great leader too.”

That’s not a good pep talk, Dr. Lou…

Rece Davis and Mark May were apparently taken a little aback. As we know, ESPN doesn’t tolerate Hitler references, no matter how innocent they may be, so it’s safe to assume that the Hall of Fame head coach will probably be off-air for a little while or forced to issue some sort of apology.

If something comes up this weekend, I’m sure our crew will be all over it.

As you were….
